So what’s on tap for Holiday trends this year? As I’ve been popping in and out of stores and browsing the mountains of catalogs in my mailbox the two trends that stand out are the Woodland and Handmade items. We’ve seen this trend all year and now it has infiltrated the holidays!
The Woodland trend uses a lot of earthy tones and textures. Not your traditional Christmas red and green but a more muted palette of gray, beige, olive-green and chocolate-brown to name a few. I think this scheme looks great with a little punch of deep magenta or a rich berry tone to liven it up a bit. Texture is key in this scheme as well. Burlap is always a popular choice, any kind of natural wood accent, pine cones or anything found in the backyard. The good thing about this woodland theme is you can leave your decor up all season. It’s more of a “winter” look rather than specifically holiday.
Now for the Handmade trend. It can be sewn up in one word: Felt. Whether its handmade ornaments, stockings or pillows you can bet it’s made of felt. Felt has actually come a long way and now is available in any color you can imagine. It’s easy to work with and the sky is the limit to what you can create. If you are a DIYer this is your season!
So, if you are in the midst of decorating your home for the holidays here are my two suggestions: 1) Get outdoors and get creative with your surroundings…you never know what little gems nature may provide. 2) Grab a pair of scissors and get creative with felt. Even if you aren’t a crafter, you may surprise yourself with what you come up with.
