As the summer winds down, I thought I’d share some of the beautiful blooms that we enjoyed this season in Charleston. Strolling the historical cobblestone streets downtown never gets old for me, especially this time of year as the window boxes are spilling over with all kinds of colorful creations. Window boxes are so popular here that the Charleston Horticultural Society kicked off the first annual Window Box Competition this year for all the gardening enthusiasts.
The weather in Charleston gets very hot and humid during the summer so I was curious as to what types of flowers are best for window boxes. I found that the following are commonly used: Hydrangeas, Petunias, Zinnias, Begonias and Geraniums. I also love the trailing greenery that is used, like Lantana and Sweet Potato Vine.
Maybe one day I’ll be lucky enough to plant my own window boxes that hang just outside my door. Until then I’m just fine perusing the old city streets of Charleston.
